Marie Renée Bender
June 20, 1947 – April 4, 2015

Marie Renée Bender passed away peacefully on Sat., April 4, 2015 at Cornwall Hospice after a long challenge with cancer.
One of Marie’s greatest memories was her audience with Pope John Paul during Governor General Jeanne Sauvé’s visit to the Vatican. The two women worked closely together for years on Parliament Hill and at Rideau Hall. Marie’s professional career in communications began in Quebec City with the Status of Women, and continued in Ottawa for many years. It was during this time that she met her future friend and husband, John Burke. The two enjoyed parallel communications’ careers, living first in the capital and later at their country home near Iroquois.
In her retirement, Marie took pleasure in art classes, yoga, swimming, gardening, and cooking. Since her illness, the past six years were less active and often very trying.
Marie leaves behind her dear mother, Lorraine Thibaudeau; brother Karl Bender; mother-in-law Janet Burke; and her rediscovered daughter, Isabelle Warren. Her father, Jean Bender, passed away when Marie was very young, but she spoke of him as if it happened only yesterday. John was lucky to share half of Marie’s life together, and misses her enormously.
Friends were received at the M. John Sullivan Funeral Home, 341 Pitt St. (across from city hall) in Cornwall on Tues., April 7 from 1 to 2:45 pm followed by the funeral liturgy in the chapel of the funeral home at 3 pm.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
