Doris A. Cooper

Doris Anne Cooper (nee Magladry) of Metcalfe, surrounded by her family, passed away peacefully at home, after a nine month struggle with GBM brain cancer, on Mon., May 7, 2012, at the age of 68 years.
She was the beloved wife of 48 years to Gary Cooper. She was the cherished Mom of Cheryl Cooper (Hugh McEwen) and Cory (Amanda). She was the adored Grandma C. to Kate and Stuart McEwen, and Ashlyn and Seamus Cooper. She was the loving sister of Keith Magladry, Marie (Jim) McDonald, Lois Deavy, Wilma, Elleda (Wayne) Thoms, Elva (Paul) Coulson, Brenda (Jim) Toll, and Laurie (Terry) Waddell, and sister-in-law to Bruce (Donna) Cooper and Dennis (Connie). She was the dearly loved Aunt Doris to many. Doris was predeceased by her parents, Gordon and Ida (Morrow) Magladry of North Russell, in-laws Norman and Clara (Morrison) Cooper, brothers-in-law Ted Brown, Sid Stuart, and Glen Deavy, and sister-in-law Marylin Magladry.
Doris grew up on a dairy farm at North Russell, and attended North Russell School and Russell Continuation School. At age 16, she went to work for the Metropolitan Life Company in Ottawa.  On Aug., 31, 1963, she married Gary Wayne Cooper of Metcalfe. Together they built a home north of Metcalfe, and a cottage on Centennial Lake, Griffith. Doris received her Registered Insurance Broker’s License from Algonquin College, and served her customers with a high standard of care for over 25 years at both McVey Insurance Service and S.A. Hicks Insurance.  She was a tireless volunteer, including long service with the Homecraft Department of the Metcalfe Agricultural Society, secretary of the Ottawa Winter Fair, co-chair of the Metcalfe Curling Club Fixed League, and secretary of the Metcalfe Union Cemetery. An avid curler, she earned countless trophies, including five Broder Cups. She always went above and beyond to make the lives of others better. Her presence will be dearly missed by her music friends, and those of the Metcalfe Curling Club and Fair.
Visitation was held at the Daley Family Funeral Home in Metcalfe on Tues., May 8 and Wed., May 9. The funeral service celebrating Doris’ life was held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thurs., May 10 with Rev. Anne Montgomery officiating, followed by interment at Metcalfe Union Cemetery. The pallbearers were Evan Cooper, Barry Magladry, Brent Magladry, Stephen Morrison, Jeff Cassidy, and Bob Reynolds. The honourary pallbearers were Wendy Reynolds and Linda Scrivens.
Special thanks to Drs. Fillingham, Tsai, Caudrielier and Nicholas, and PSW Pierrette Graham, for your care and gift of time. Many thanks to the members of the Metcalfe Agricultural Society and Curling Club for a beautiful reception following the interment. We also wish to thank family, friends, and neighbours for your tremendous support over the past nine months, including cards, food, help, floral tributes, and donations. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
