Christena (Robinson) Cumming

Christena (Robinson) Cumming (nee Armstrong) passed away peacefully at the Dundas Manor in Winchester, with family by her side, on Tues., Nov., 16, 2010 at the age of 91.
She was the beloved wife of the late Willis Robinson, and the late Donald Cumming. She was predeceased by brother Alex, and sisters Jennie Drury, Mary Foster, and Edith Holmes. She was the dearly loved mother of Bryan (Shirley) Robinson of Surrey, B.C., Jan (Carl) Robinson of Winchester Springs, Dwayne Robinson of Thorsby, Alta, Lynn (Bill) Green of Guelph, and Peter (Susan) Robinson of Mississauga. She is loved by her 15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She leaves behind her step-children, James, Wally, Norma Jean, the late Glenda, and their families. She will be remembered by cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born and raised in Ormond on the Armstrong family farm, she attended Winchester High School. Christena followed her dream and graduated from Cornwall General Hospital as an RN. In 1943, she married Willis Robinson and raised five children on their family farm east of Winchester. Christena was always involved in church and community groups. While employed as a Registered Nurse at Winchester District Memorial Hospital, she primarily worked in the obstetrical department. She could lay claim to assisting in the delivery of many newborns in the surrounding area.
After the loss of her first husband, Willis, she married Donald Cumming and moved to Maxville. There she was involved with church groups, volunteering at the Maxville Manor, and numerous community activities. Following Donald’s death, she returned to Winchester.
Throughout the years, her hands were always busy knitting sweaters, crocheting afghans, and gardening both in vegetable and flower gardens. In her senior years, she won many awards at the Horticultural Society, and Maxville Fair.
The family received friends at the Daniels Funeral Chapels Inc. in Winchester on Fri., Nov. 19. The funeral service was held at the Winchester United Church on Sat., Nov. 20, with Rev. Christine Lowson officiating, followed by interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville. The pallbearers were Christena’s grandsons: Craig, Daryl, Brad, Jeffrey, and Kevin Robinson, and Rob Green.
