Evelyn Ruth Francis

Evelyn Ruth Francis of South Mountain died at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Sun., Jan. 30, 2011.
She was born August 1, 1922 in Winchester to T.W. Holmes and the former Luella McMillan. She was raised in Winchester and educated at the public and high school there, and at Ottawa Normal School. At Winchester on April 20, 1946, she married Don Francis, who predeceased her on Dec. 20, 1993. After their marriage, the couple lived in the South Mountain area where Evelyn taught in local schools for more than 35 years.
Although she taught all grades in country schools for many terms, she really enjoyed helping the small pupils at Shanly Public School.Evelyn enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and crafts, and made many quilts for her family. Her vegetable and flower gardens were a keen interest, and she enjoyed exhibiting and received special honours in local fairs for many years. She enjoyed her church where, over the years, she was Sunday school teacher, elder, secretary and U.C.W. president, and secretary and treasurer. Another keen interest was her Seniors’ Club where she held many jobs. She also enjoyed and worked for her retired teachers’ group.
Evelyn is survived by two sons and one daughter: Ron (Maria Pak) of Pointe Claire, Que., Roger (Joyce) of Winchester, and Rhonda (Michael Patenaude) of Ottawa; four grandchildren, Lisa (Nick), Mike (Chantal), Rod, and Julien Francis, and three great-grandsons, Landon, Henry, and Desmond. She is survived by one sister, Irene Crowder (Garfield) of South Mountain, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one brother, Glenn (Norma).
Evelyn rested at the Byers Funeral Home, 2990 Church Street, South Mountain (613-989-3836) on Tues., Feb 1. A funeral service will be held at the South Mountain United Church on Main Street today, Wed., Feb. 2 at 11 am. Interment will be held in the spring at South Gower Cemetery.
