Jeff O’Neill (middle) was a star forward with the Winchester Hawks from 1973 to 1977, captaining the team in his final seasons, and keeping things exciting for fans at a time when the young squad carried a less than impressive win-loss record. Despite that, O’Neill was back in the village Sat., Feb. 3 during the Hawks’ 50th anniversary celebration, and recalled fondly his time in Winchester. “I do have such fond memories… The teammates I had became my brothers, and this is such a great community, which was a big part of why I came out [from Ottawa] to play here,” he said. With him, O’Neill brought news of an educational bursary he’ll be personally financing for college or university students who lace-up for the Hawks in the coming years. The first-ever winner was also announced, with assistant captain Kyle Kuehni (left) collecting the $1,500 honour. He is currently studying at the University of Ottawa, while lining-up at centre with Winchester, netting 15 goals and adding 17 assists in 38 games this season.
