Doris Hitsman, a lifetime resident of Chesterville, passed away suddenly at the Garden Villa Retirement Residence on Mon., Sept. 5, 2016. She was 91.
She was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Mabel McMillan (nee Wallace), and her loving husband, Douglas Hitsman.
She spent her first few years in Grantley. Later, the family moved to Chesterville where she spent the rest of her life. She married her husband, Douglas on Oct. 9, 1948, and they celebrated 50 years together. Doris loved her family and friends, and never missed a birthday, holiday celebration, or shopping trip. She had a great sense of humour, and always wore a smile.
She was a lifelong member of Christ Church United, and a dedicated member of the church choir for 60 years. She was also a Lifetime Member of the UCW. She was a proud and loyal employee of Nestle Canada for 43 years.
She was the dear aunt of Marlene Droppo (the late Foster), Francis Beckstead (the late Marlene), Mervyn Beckstead (Mary Jo), Mary Chisholm (RD) (the late Mack Beckstead), Lorilee Reynen (Rene), Maureen VanDerVeen (John), Sandra Theriault (Harold), Linda McMillan, Charles McMillan (Carol), Marilyn Guy (Lloyd), Jane Hess (the late Richard), and David Casselman (Carol) She was a loving great-aunt to Lauren, Chad, and Jillian VanDerVeen. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Helen McMillan. She was predeceased by her husband, Doug; her sisters, Hazel Beckstead (the late Maurice), and Eileen MacMillan (the late Jack); and her brother, Clare McMillan. Doris will be fondly remembered by several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Chesterville on Thurs., Sept 8 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service was held at Christ Church United in Chesterville on Fri., Sept.9 at 1 pm with Rev. Debbie Poirier officiating, followed by interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville. The honourary pallbearers were Francis Beckstead, Lorne Finniss, Brian Swerdfeger, and Lloyd Guy. The pallbearers were Mervyn Beckstead, Harold Theriault, Rene Reynen, John VanDerVeen, Chad VanDerVeen, and Brandon DeJong.
