Velma Hummell

Velma Hummell (nee Elser), a resident of Dundas Manor Nursing Home in Winchester for the past five and a half years, passed away there peacefully on Sun., July 19, 2015, surrounded by family. She was 80.
She was born in Ottawa on March 15, 1935 to her parents, William and Irene Elser (nee Stephens).
She was a kind, generous, loving, considerate, selfless, nurturing, and thoughtful person. All of these traits meant that Velma’s  door was always open, and she welcomed everyone into her home no matter what time of day or night, whether they needed a delicious home cooked meal, a place to stay, or some advice. No one was ever judged, and everyone was always accepted.
She always enjoyed a good game of cards, board games with her grandchildren, and Bingo with her friends. She was always involved when there were people around. She always wanted to be part of the fun.
Velma also loved to cook. Her family will forever cherish her delicious meals and desserts. Velma also canned and preserved many items from her own garden. Dill pickles, icicle pickles, relish, tomatoes, and freezer jam, just to name a few. The cellar and freezer were always full.
She was a strong and determined woman who always put her family and friends first. She didn’t always think that she had given her family enough, but that’s not true at all. She gave her family more than they could have ever asked for or imagined. She gave them strength, courage, acceptance, warmth, and most of all, unconditional love. She created a family that will always be exactly that: a family. A family that accepts no matter the circumstances, a family that will always be together, a family that supports one another in all that they do, a family. Velma taught her family all that they need to know to survive, and in their eyes she was and always will be perfect.
Velma is survived by her children, Steven Sheldrick (Shirley Kerr) of Mississauga, and Debbie Linton (Oswald) of Chesterville; her grandchildren, Mary McComb (Mark), Elissa Gadsby (Ian), Christena Harrow (Justin), and Brenda McGuey (Jaime); and her great-grandchildren, Blythe, Ella, Addison, Ben, and Brayden. She was predeceased by her husband, Mack Hummell, and her brothers, Allen and Charles Elser. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Chesterville on Wed., July 22 from 10 to 11 am. A graveside interment service was held at Grantley Cemetery immediately following the visitation with Rev. Joyce Trask officiating. The pallbearers were grandchildren Mary, Mark, Elissa, Ian, Christena, and Justin, and great-grandchildren Blythe, Ella, Addison, and Ben. A reception followed at Chesterville’s Royal Canadian Legion.
Donations to the Dundas Manor Activity Fund would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
