Thomas McAuley of Metcalfe died suddenly at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Sept. 2, 2003 at the age of 57.
He was born on June 13, 1946 in Ormond. He was the beloved son of Phyllis McAuley (Brown) of Metcalfe and the late John McAuley.
He was the loving father of Greg (Gina) of White Lake, and Jeff (Paula) of Goderich. He was the proud grandfather of Meghan, Robbie, Paul and Grace. He was the dear brother of Ruth Quinn of Kemptville, Florence (Gary) Bilow of Metcalfe, Joyce (Fred) Brown of Kenmore, Mary McAuley of Nepean, Bob (Corinne) McAuley of Mississauga, and Nancy (Robert) Ziegler of Moose Creek. He will be sadly missed by his nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
He retired in June 1996 from Agriculture Canada at the Experimental Farm after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Osgoode Township Volunteer Fire Department for many years, eventually reaching the rank of chief.
Since retirement, he had become the local handyman for his neighbors, friends and family. He did many renovation jobs, installed hardwood floors, designed and erected decks and gazebos, as well as maintaining properties. He completed every job to the best of his ability with precise attention to detail. He took great pride in his home and his vehicle, spending many hours ensuring they were maintained in the best possible condition.
Friends called at the Duncan Funeral Home in Metcalfe on Sept. 4. The funeral service was held in the chapel on Sept. 5 with Rev. Casey McKibbon officiating. Interment followed at Springhill Cemetery. Afterwards, a lunch was served at the funeral home.
The pallbearers were Thomas Sullivan, Steven Sullivan, Bryan McAuley Flood and Robert Ziegler.
Donations to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
