Lyle “Slim” Merkley
A lifetime resident of the Chesterville area, Lyle Merkley passed away at the Montfort Hospital in Ottawa on Mon., Aug. 1, 2011. He was 85.
Lyle was born in Williamsburg Township on Aug. 25, 1925, the ninth of 15 children born to Edsel and Bessie Merkley (nee Wallace). Lyle married Thelma Droppo, and together they had two children: Marlene and Burton.
Lyle worked for 36 years at Nestlé’s, retiring in 1990 at the age of 65. For several years, following his retirement, Lyle and Thelma travelled to Florida for three months each winter. When his health was good, Lyle was a regular participator in the “coffee club” at the Chesterville Legion.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Thelma; his children, Marlene Kelly (Mike) of Chesterville, and Dr. Burton Merkley (Susann) of Manotick; his siblings, Lois McGaughey (Jack) of Cornwall, Lorna Bolster (Otty) of Brushton, New York, Audrey Casselman (the late Orval) of Williamsburg, Maxine Feeley (Henry) of Winchester, and Joan Beckstead (the late Bert) of Chesterville. Lyle will be fondly remembered by grandchildren Ben Merkley (Veronique), Matthew Merkley (Jocelyn), Rebecca Merkley (Mathieu Bisson), Sarah Merkley, Aaron Kelly (Cass McCracken), Devin Kelly, and great-grandchildren Gabrielle, Caleb, William, and Tristan Merkley. He was predeceased by his sisters, Vera Smith, Dorothy Price, Emma Hess (survived by Graham), and his brothers, Walter, Erwin, Clifton, Lee, Carl (survived by Madeleine), and Dean Merkley (survived by Marie). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Chesterville on Fri., Aug. 5, with Rev. Janet Evans officiating, followed by interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville. The pallbearers were grandsons Ben Merkley, Matthew Merkley, Aaron Kelly, and Devin Kelly.
