CORNWALL – Conditions were anything but ideal as the first high school matches of the beautiful game were played in the Seaway City.
Pouring rain, which eventually dissolved turf into slippery, unforgiving footing, marked day one (Mon., May 1) of the 2017 SD&G boys’ soccer season.
“It was a sloppy day,” noted North Dundas District High School coach Kevin Bell. “The field at La Citadelle was pretty much ruined.”
Seven schools including North Dundas have teams entered in the “A” pool. Joining the Devils are the Seaway Spartans, Glengarry Gaels, L’Heritage Dragons, La Citadelle Patriotes, Char-Lan Crusaders and Tagwi Warriors.
There are four teams forming the “AA” division including the St. Joe’s Panthers, Holy Trinity Falcons, CCVS Raiders and St. Lawrence Saints (officially an ‘A” school).
This year’s campaign is a short one opening on May 1 and closing with the playoffs on Mon., May 15
The Char-Lan Senior Crusaders finished day one with a pair of victories – a 1-nil decision against North Dundas and a 1-nil win over the host La Citadelle Crusaders.
Coach Bell reported there was good action in both ends of the pitch.
North Dundas earned a point in their second encounter battling the Seaway Spartans to a 1-1 draw. Jack van Kessel netted the Devils a 1-0 lead, which held until Seaway’s Nathan Tibben tied it up 1-1.
“We carried the play most of the game,” Bell said. “We also hit three goal posts, a cross bar and had a goal called back.”
The Senior Spartans also registered a 2-2 draw with La Citadelle. Griffith Patterson cracked both Seaway markers.
The Junior Devils were blanked 2-nil by Char-Lan in their lone match.
“The juniors had a tough time moving the ball against a strong Char-Lan squad,” remarked the coach.
North Dundas will host a pair of junior exhibition matches on Friday (May 5) with the Tagwi Warriors and La Citadelle Patriotes providing the opposition.
