Both Winchester baseball teams record a win
WINCHESTER – Both of Winchester’s National Capital Baseball League teams launched the week recording desperately needed victories.
Here at Frank Morgan Field on Monday (July 31) the Tier 1 Sox outlasted the third-place Kanata Athletics 11-8 and in Ottawa the same evening the Tier 4 Heat handed the Fighting Irish an 8-6 set back.
Both the – eighth-place Sox (4-15-0) and ninth-place Heat (6-8-0) – need to chalk up as many wins a possible if they hope to qualify for post-season play. The Sox are five points out of the seventh and final playoff spot, held down by Bytown Battalion (5-6-3) with five games left to play while the Heat, with 10 games to play, stands one point out of the final (eighth) playoff berth currently occupied by the Braumeisters (6-8-1).
Tomorrow (Thurs., Aug. 3) the Sox are hosting the number-one ranked Brewers (12-4-2) at 8:00 pm. The Heat is on the road until Tues., Aug. 8 when they will be in Winchester to take on the Naturals at 8:30 pm.
Fifth-inning runs by Mike Heffer (BB), Ethan Nodwell (1B) and Matt Ware (1B) along with run scoring singles by Matt Uhrig and Chris “Edgar” Hart allowed the Sox to take down the Athletics 11-8 on Monday.
Hart also homered and scored in the second inning cutting Winchester’s deficit to 3-1. Nodwell cashed a ‘can o corn’ with Heffer (BB) on board in the third tying it up 3-3.
Dayton Courchene (BB), Justin Chartrand (BB) and Heffer (BB) all touched home when Nodwell delivered his second round tripper, grand salami, in the fourth frame. Nik Paas followed drawing a walk and scoring the Sox eighth run of the inning on a Hart single.
The Athletics booked five runs in the fifth and closed the final gap to 11-8.
Curtis Lacelle got the start and was relieved by Courchene. Nodwell closed it out and earned the save.
