Marilyn Grace Vriend
Marilyn Grace Duncan was born on Feb., 22, 1955 in Belleville. Her parents, Helen and Erwin Duncan, were living there while Erwin was playing hockey. She had an older brother and two younger sisters.
She grew up in Vernon, and attended school there until being bused to Osgoode for Grades 7 and 8. She then went to Osgoode Township High School, and graduated from Grade 13 in 1973. She was always involved in many sports and activities, and served as OTHS Head Girl. During those years, she met the love of her life, Chris Vriend. She loved riding with him on his motorcycle. Next, she attended St. Lawrence College in Brockville to study nursing, and graduated as a registered nurse in 1975. She began working at the Ottawa Civic Hospital.
On a beautiful sunny Sat., June 12, 1976, at Osgoode Baptist Church in Vernon, Marilyn and Chris were married. They spent many long hours, with friends and family helping, building their home on Stagecoach Road, near the Vriend family home. In May 1977, they welcomed their first child, Kerrilyn. By this time, Marilyn and Chris had formed their company, Vriend Construction. The business grew, as did their family with Scott born in 1979, Jennifer in 1981, Kimberly in 1985, and Chadin 1989. They became well-known in their community, as the children grew, attended school, and played sports locally.
As a family and as a business, Marilyn and Chris supported and donated to many local events, whether it was sponsoring carnival events in Greely or Osgoode or church socials in Enniskerry. For Marilyn, nothing was more important than her husband and her children, her parents, siblings, and the other members of their large extended family. They hosted many parties and family gatherings through the years. Many visitors from Holland were given a place to stay, and taken sightseeing when they came to visit. Marilyn opened her home and her heart to everyone. She was always bustling about in the kitchen, at their home or at the cottage making sure everyone was taken care of. Summers were all about the cottage, boating, water skiing, and family togetherness. The cottage was always one of her favourite places. As time went on, the family grew, with spouses and grandchildren. Marilyn was thrilled to be a grandmother, and her love grew with every addition to the family: Peter, Abbigayle, Elizabeth, Dustin, Mason, Nicholas, and Cole. Each and every one loved in a way that was all Marilyn. Chris and Marilyn bought some property on Joyce Lake, and renovated a cabin that became another favourite place. They would travel in by ATVs or snowmobiles often accompanied by their children and grandchildren, as well as many friends.
On Tues., Feb.9, 2016, Marilyn passed away peacefully, at home, with her husband and children by her side, and the voices of her grandchildren in the background. She was the beloved wife of Chris Vriend. Together, they poured their hearts into raising a family, while establishing a prosperous company. She was the devoted mother of Kerrilyn, Scott (Trina), Jennifer (Jesse Hallsworth), Kimberly (Philip Bertrand), and Chad (Natalie Guertin). She treasured every moment with her grandchildren: Peter, Abbigayle and Elizabeth Vaughan; Dustin and Mason Vriend; Nicholas Hallsworth; and Cole Bertrand. She was the dearly loved daughter of Erwin and Helen Duncan, and the cherished sister of Alan (Jan), Susan (Paul Boland, the late Allan Crump), and Sharron (Tom Laplante). She was the dear sister-in-law of Catherine (Delmer Armstrong), Connie (Norm Atherfold), Peter (Claire), Trudy JanKorsgaard), Ted (Teena), Francis (Donna), Marian (Ian Macdonald, the late Dave Craig), Vera (Joe Hendriks), Gina (Cornel Hendrikx), Paul (Diane), and Marcel (Jennifer Caves). She was admired by her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Her loving, kind, and genuine spirit touched the hearts of so many.
Visitations were held at Daley Family Funeral Home on Fri., Feb. 12. The funeral service was held on Sat., Feb. 13 at Parkway Road Pentecostal Church. Loving eulogies were given by Patricia Hough and Linda Bisonette, and by her five children. The pallbearers were Scott Vriend, Chad Vriend, Jesse Hallsworth, and Philip Bertrand. Interment will be at Springhill Cemetery in Metcalfe.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to family, friends, and neighbours, for the many expressions of sympathy, cards, flowers, food, and donations made in memory of our dearly loved wife, daughter, mother, and grandmother. Thank you to all who attended the visitations and funeral service. We will always remember the kindness shown to us. She will never be gone from our hearts.
