CHESTERVILLE – The North Dundas Rockets greatly improved their playoff positioning this past weekend as the team won their final three regular season games.
The Rockets opened the series of wins with a 4-3 victory over the Cumberland Bandits Sat., Feb. 17.
North Dundas opened the scoring on the power play when Bryden van Kessel found the back of the net.
The Rockets capitalized on the man-advantage in the second period after Matt Cowley and Van Kessel set up Justin Lefebvre for his first of two goals in the contest.
Chris Marchand extended the Rockets lead in the middle frame after Van Kessel fed him a pass for his third point of the game.
Lefebvre sealed the victory for the Rockets in the third period after scoring his second of the game. Shawn Simms had the assist on the goal.
Rockets 9 – Eagles 3
North Dundas travelled to St-Isidore Sun., Feb. 18 for a contest with the fifth-place Eagles.
The Rockets scored four times in the game’s opening six minutes to get ahead early.
Defenceman Tom Fingler got the scoring spree started for the Rockets less than two minutes into the game.
North Dundas then went up by a pair of goals soon after when Lefebvre netted his first of the game.
Conner Roth made it a three-goal lead after being set up by Marchand and Fingler.
Marchand capped off the surge of goals just after five minutes had past when he was fed the puck by Fingler.
Lefebvre capitalized in the middle frame on the power play to increase the Rockets’ lead to 4-2.
The Rockets’ power play struck again three minutes later after Roth scored his third tally of the game.
North Dundas closed out the game with three goals in the final frame, two of which came off the stick of Roth.
Rockets 6 – Vikings 3
The Rockets picked up their third win in a row Mon., Feb. 19 over the first-place Papineauville Vikings.
The Vikings jumped ahead early in the first period after getting goals from Joey Simoneau, Hugo Lushigan and Justin Lambrosse.
However, the Rockets came within a goal as the opening frame ended. Fingler and Lefebvre found the back of the net before the teams headed to the middle period.
van Kessel took over in the second period as he tied the game and then gave the Rockets the lead. Lefebvre and Brad Stitt tallied assists on the markers.
Simms and Roth sealed the win for North Dundas in the third period.
The win clinched second-place in the standings for the Rockets, which gives the team home-ice advantage throughout the post-season
The Rockets took home some hardware this week as the National Capital Junior Hockey League handed out regular season awards. van Kessel captured two honours, including Most Valuable Player and Top Defenceman. Lefebvre took home the Rookie of the Year honour. The team’s head coach, Nik Paas, and assistant coach, Lenard McLean, captured the Coaching Staff of the Year award and Rockets’ general manager Rob Sadler was named Executive of the Year.
The Rockets will await the conclusion of the four-team playdowns series between Morrisburg, South Grenville, Metcalfe and Vankleek Hill before beginning playoffs this weekend.
