WINCHESTER – Winchester Hawks president/general manager Keith Ashton reports the Central Canada Junior Hockey League Tier 2 (CCHL2) team will start its annual summer skate sessions this weekend.
The first gathering is slated for Kemptville’s North Grenville Community Centre Saturday (July 8) and will continue on a weekly basis (July 15 and July 22). The on-ice sessions presents an opportunity for prospective as well as returning players to meet the coaching staff while working out the off-season kinks.
Ashton has announced the Hawks have added Ottawa’ Mike Guolla as an assistant coach.
“Mike [Guolla] is a professor at the University of Ottawa, has coached minor hockey at various levels and wanted advance to the junior level,” explain Ashton.
Guolla joins newly appointed head coach Bob Gould and former Winchester resident and member of the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs and Brampton Battalion Derek Froats (assistant and video coach) on the coaching staff.
Ashton and assistant GM Dominic Menard have been scouting player prospects during June covering all of the CCHL camps in the process.
“We have made some good contacts with the junior ‘A’ clubs and have new players coming to our camp,” said Ashton.
Ashton said he is still trying to lock down Sat., Feb. 3 as an alumni day, but hasn’t received confirmation from the Township of North Dundas.
There will be a special 50th anniversary ceremonial face off on opening night (Fri., Sept. 15), which will bring the Ottawa West Golden Knights to Winchester.
