WINCHESTER – A 12-0 romp over the Coyotes opened the Winchester Heat’s inaugural season in the National Capital Baseball League on a positive note.

The fledgling Tier 4 Heat squad administered that 12-0 pounding on the Coyotes last Friday (May 19) at the Nepean Sportsplex only to falter and fall 12-3 to the Knights on Monday (May 22) at home at Morgan Field.

Waiting

Winchester’s other NCBL team, the Tier 1 Sox, have yet to play a game, although they got one inning in last Thursday (May 18) in their home opener at Morgan Field before a passing storm halted proceedings. The Sox led the Bytown Battalion 7-3 after the first frame. Tonight (Wed., May 24), the Sox are scheduled to meet the Mudd at McKendry Park in Metcalfe. They will host the Brewers in their first home game on Thurs., June 1 at 8 pm.

Heat red hot

Winchester gave Josh Kirkby the starting assignment and he delivered working a seven-inning, six hit 12-0 shutout over the Coyotes.

Kirkby walked four and hit one batter as only three Coyotes reached third base. The Heat starter was named the Horner & Pietersma Player of the Game.

Right fielder Jake Byers (2B), left fielder Josh Stubbings (1B) and first baseman Cody Carruthers (1B) made the circuit in the second inning opening up a 3-0 lead for the Heat. Chris Embury, Stubbings and Carruthers collected the RBIs.

Catcher Adam Konink doubled and scored in the third frame. Shortstop Ryan Romans was hit by a pitch and made it 5-0 in the fifth.

Wyatt Irven singled and booked Winchester’s sixth run on Chris Embury’s RBI double in the sixth.

A six-run explosion in the seventh completed the romp when Konink (2B), Colby Huybregts (1B), Stubbings (2B), Ryan Thompson (1B), Irven (1B), and Chris Embury (3B) all made the circuit.

Big bats

Embury finished the game with three hits (1B, 2B, 3B), a run scored and four RBI. Konink went three for five (1B, 2-2B) and scored twice. Stubbings hit two for four (2-1B) drove in a pair and scored twice. Irven had two hits (2-1B), scored twice and drove in a run. Kirkby chipped in a pair of singles and an RBI.

Knights 12 – Heat 3

Winchester’s offence dried up in Monday’s home opener, which went into the books as a 12-3 loss.

Chris Embury doubled and plated the Heat’s first inning run. Konink singled and scored in the fifth while Romans singled and counted his team’s third run on a Konink base hit in the bottom of the seventh.

Konink who hit three singles in three trips, drove in a run and scored one was named the Funtastic Pools Player of the Game.

The Knights opened with a five run first, added four more in the fourth and finished up with a three-run seventh.

Eric Heldens was the Winchester starter. Justin McMahon came on in relief.

Embury (2 for 3), Stubbings (2 for 4), Romans (2 for 3), McMahon, Carruthers, Ryan Thompson and Colton Robinson tapped out the Heat’s other hits.

Home starters

The Heat’s starting nine for Monday’s home opener were: Chris Embury – second base; Tyler Hunt – short stop; Stubbings – left field; Konink – catcher; Heldens – pitcher; Ryan Embury – third base; Romans – first base; Thompson centre field and Huybregts – right field.

Next action

Tomorrow (Thurs., May 25), the Heat will be at home at Morgan Field to face the Naturals at 8 pm. On Monday, (May 29) the South End Strykers will visit the Heat for an 8:30 pm start.
