CORNWALL – Day one of the Winchester Sox’s 2017 Upper Canada Little League Junior/Senior Baseball season was a successful one.
Winchester visited the Seaway City last Thursday (May 4) and registered a one-sided 13-3 victory.
Sox coach Allen Christoffersen and his assistant Ken Byrne took a good look at their pitchers sending five hurlers to the hill.
Cam Sherrer got the start and walked one. He also helped turn a double play started by second baseman Chris Cotton, who relayed to Matt Roach at first, who fired a strike to catcher Seth Christoffersen who tagged the runner out at the plate.
Christoffersen pitched the second inning and struck out two. Eric Armstrong took over in the third and rang up three Ks. Owen Richardson went to the mound in the fourth and struck out a pair of River Rats. Roach finished up and was tagged for three runs on two hits and three walks. He fanned one batter in his inning of work.
Eric Armstrong (1B) scored Winchester’s first run on the opening frame. Third inning runs by Roach (1B), Mason McLeod (BB), Josh Armstrong (1B), Eric Armstrong (1B) and Toby Byrne (1B) opened up a 6-0 advantage.
Sherrer beat out a dropped third strike and scored along with Brandon Lovely (BB) in the fourth inning.
A five-run fifth frame locked up the 13-3 decision as McLeod (BB), Cole Chapman (BB), Josh Armstrong, Christoffersen (BB) and Sherrer (E2) all touched home. Richardson cashed the final three runs drilling an RBI double.
The Sox play their home games on Wednesday evenings at Morgan Field. The first pitch is thrown at 6:15 pm.
