Sox outlast Bytown Battalion 15-12

WINCHESTER – It wasn’t pretty, actually it was ugly, but a win is a win is a win.

And the Winchester Sox gladly accepted a positive 15-12 result posted against the visiting Bytown Battalion.

Last week’s (Thurs., July 20) offensive meeting at Morgan Field produced win number three for the Sox (3-12-0) who, with six points have closed to within two points of the seventh and final playoff berth in Tier 1 of the National Capital Baseball League. The Capital City Cubs (4-7-0) have eight points and stand seventh while the sixth-place Battalion (4-6-2) have earned 10 points and are within striking distance for the Sox. Unfortunately for Winchester, the Cubs have four games in hand and the Battalion three.

Tonight (Wed., July 26) the Sox open a four-game, six-day run in Metcalfe against the Mudd (7-6-2). Tomorrow (Thurs., July 27) the Kingston Ponies (5-7-3) come to Winchester for an 8:30 pm start. Sunday (July 30) the Sox travel to Ottawa (Sportsplex) to tangle with the Athletics (8-5-3). Monday (July 31) the Athletics are the visitors for an 8:30 pm tilt.

Sox by three

Winchester sent four pitchers to the hill including starter Ryan Clarke who was followed by Bobby Paradis, Curtis Lacelle and Chris “Edger” Hart.

The Sox led 3-1 after one, 10-1 after two and 13-3 after three innings. The Battalion cashed four runs in the top of the fourth including a home run and closed the gap to 15-12 in a five-run fifth.

Sox catcher Matt Ware crossed the plate three times and drove in five runs. He belted a round tripper, hit a pair of singles and drew a base on balls.

Matt Uhrig also booked three runs reaching on a pair of singles and a walk.

Cam Shaw (2 – 1B), Mike Heffer (2 BB) and Jordan Harcourt (2 RBI, 2 – 2B, BB and error) each made the circuit twice. Single runs were provided by Ethan Nodwell (2 – 1B), Hart (RBI, BB, HBP and error) and Adrian Delorey (3 RBI, BB, HBP).
