Betty Barkley, a lifetime resident of the area, passed away suddenly at Dundas Manor Nursing Home in Winchester on Mon., Dec. 21, 2015. She was 85.
She was born in Matilda Township on Jan. 10, 1930 to her parents, Mahlon and Alma Whitteker (nee Casselman). On April 27, 1950 she married Orlin Barkley at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church parsonage, and together they had one daughter, Barbara.
Betty was an ambitious lady, and she worked for many years as a custodian at Winchester District Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1990 at the age of 60. Following her retirement, she took a Personal Support Worker course and began working for ParaMed helping local people in need of assistance, and she worked there into her late 70’s when she retired for good. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed being around people. She loved to travel, and play euchre, bingo and Yahtzee.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Knapp (Steven) of Dunbar; her sister, Marian Barkley of Inkerman; her grandchildren, Amanda Knapp-Acker (Chris) of Winchester, and Shawna McLeod (Chris) of Berwick; and great-grandchildren Jessica, Sarah, Meaghan, Jon, and William McLeod. She was predeceased by her husband, Orlin Barkley; her sister Marjorie Baker; and her brothers, Bill, Solon, Donald, Harry, and Sheldon Whitteker. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Friends called at Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Sun., Dec. 27 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on Mon., Dec. 28 at 11 am with Rev. Christine Lowson officiating, followed by interment at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville. The pallbearers were Kevin Barkley, Dillon Barkley, Chris McLeod, Chris Acker, Steve Knapp, and Ryan Lewis.
Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association, or the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
