Maria Berkelaar, formerly of Brockville, died on Wed., July 31, 2002 at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Ottawa after sufferng from the ravages of Alzheimer disease for many years. She was 86.
Mrs. Berkelaar was born on June 17, 1916 in Vankeveen, Holland to the late Siemon and Magdalena Smit (nee Kluiver). She was raised in Holland, and married Gijs Berkelaar on Nov. 13, 1941 in Holland. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1951, settling in Spencerville. They lived in Spencerville for 15 years, until Mr. Berkelaar died in 1966. Mrs. Berkelaar remained in Spencerville until 1969 when she moved to Brockville. She resided in Brockville for many years, until health problems forced her to move to Ottawa.
She was the beloved mother of Ria (Theo TerHorst) of Ingleside, Magda (Bill Wiersma) of Hamilton, Corrie (Mark Zylstra) of Michigan, Sim (Truusje) of Williamsburg, Coby (Bill Zandbergen) of Brinston, John (Marylin) of Burlington, Henny (Dave Ferrone) of Nepean, Anita (Henry Hogeveen) of Stittsville and Gil (Sheri Getz) of London.
She was a dear Oma to 24 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She is survived by siblings Cor Smit (Klaske Boersma) of Russell, as well as three sisters and one brother in the Netherlands. Also survived by many nieces and nephews in Canada and the Netherlands. Predeceased by grandchildren Shaun Wiersma, Sandra Zandbergenand Rachel Zandbergen; also several brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Berkelaar was a member of the Christian Reformed Church. She was a devout Christian with an unwavering faith in God. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Donations to the Alzheimer’s Society, Ottawa Sisters of Charity or the Canadian Diabetes Society would be appreciated by the family.
Funeral service was held at Community Christian Reformed Church, Dixons Corners, on Sat., Aug. 3 with Pastor Henry Gunnink officiating. Interment at New Union Cemetery, Williamsburg. Arrangements entrusted to Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Williamsburg.
Pallbearers were Sim Berkelaar, John Berkelaar, Gil Berkelaar, Daryn Berkelaar, Harvey TerHorst and Brad Zandbergen.
