Hendrika Johanna Brunsveld (nee Menkhorst), a resident of Morrisburg for the past four years, passed away at the Chartwell Hartford Retirement Residence on Tues., July 3, 2018. She was 84.
Hendrika was born in Borculo, Holland on Nov. 19, 1933 to her parents, Antonie and Hendrika Menkhorst (nee Legters).
She followed her fiancé to Canada in May of 1954, and worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Barton’s family until she returned to the Netherlands in December of 1955. She then married Gerrit Willem Brunsveld on Feb. 16, 1956, and together they immigrated to Canada on March 23, 1956.
Hendrika, who chose to be a stay-at-home mother, contributed to family life by raising laying hens, tending a large garden, baking, taking in sewing work, driving school bus, as well as being bookkeeper for her husband’s construction business. She was also very involved in volunteer work. She taught Sunday school, was chauffeur to many, helped organize funeral luncheons, assisted with theatre suppers, was a member of the catering committee, organized pie baking, was money manager for the yearly Timothy Christian School bazaar, was “Grandma” for the friendship group, and was involved in many other areas of church life.
She lived a full life and now she rests in heavenly peace.
She is survived by her children, Annette Stuart-Bequette (Dale) of Lunenburg, Marianne Prinzen (Herman) of Picton, Will Brunsveld (Bonnie) of Newington, and Elizabeth Brunsveld (John Sluiskes) of Lansdowne; her grandchildren, Megan (Jamie), Koryn (Kevin), Lori (Matthew), Lindsey (Leighton), Andrew (Julie), Holly (Jake), Hilary, Luke (Audreanna), David, Esther, Amy (Mike), Justin, Emma (Andrew), Gerrit (Emma), and Reagan (Steven); and her great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Zane, Darcy, Britton, Faythe, Quinn, Emerson, Raven, Atticus, Arlyn, Jethro, Wren, Harper, Ryker, Harlow, Anna, and Felix. She was the step grandmother to Leigh Bequette (Jen) and Erik Bequette (Steph), and step great-grandmother to Kaia Abrams-Bequette.
She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Frederika Menkhorst, Ineke Oosten, and Cilia Jansen, all of the Netherlands. Hendrika was predeceased by her husband, Gerrit “George” Willem Brunsveld; her parents; her grandson, Gerrit William Brunsveld; her son-in-law, Allan Stuart; and her brothers, Johan and Wim Menkhorst. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Williamsburg Christian Reformed Church on Fri., July 6 from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am, which was conducted by Pastor Joe Groeneveld. The interment service followed at New Union Cemetery in Williamsburg, which was conducted by Pastor John Noordhof. The pallbearers were grandchildren Reagan Willett, Koryn Witteveen, Amy Brunsveld-Dewar, Justin Brunsveld, Emma Harbers, and Lindsey Woods.
