Ethelwyn Carkner

Ethelwyn Gladys Carkner (nee Barrie) passed away peacefully in the excellent care of Carleton Lodge on Wed., Feb. 19, 2014.
She was born in Cabri, Sask. in 1918 to Bert Barrie and Ethelwyn Owen Barrie. She grew up in Chesterville, where in 1939, she married the love of her life, Austin (predeceased in 2000). Ethelwyn was the loving and supportive Mom to Anne Barkley (Ralph) of Williamsburg, Connie Barton (Phillip) of Brockville, Helen (Bernard Léveillé) of Gibsons B.C., Arthur (Janet) of Ottawa, and John (Lori) of Arnprior. She was the proud Grandma of David, Jamie (Michelle), and Chris Barkley; Julie Barton Mills (Ed) and Ellen Barton; Warren (Joanne) and Kent (Myette) Foster; Daniel (Indri), Andrew, and Hugh Carkner; and Sam and Niall Carkner. She was predeceased by grandson Peter Barton in 2008. She was the loving Great-Grandma of Djenka Bloom Barkley; Simon and Tim Barton; Evan and Cara Mills; Austin and Joe Limburg; Brianna Foster; and Phoebe and Sloane Foster. She was the beloved sister of Isobel Maxey of Qualicum Beach, B.C. She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Argyle, and her brother, Bobbie Barrie. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
An inspiration to many, she is remembered with fondness, and trepidation by generations of students (not to mention teachers) in the Osgoode and Metcalfe areas, and the former Carleton Board of Education where she was the first female vice-principal with that board.
Ethelwyn was a dear friend to many, especially Anita Weagant and Margaret Johnstone, and her friends in the Cass Bridge and Winchester areas. She was a lifelong volunteer, including with the Sunshine Circle at Winchester District Memorial Hospital, which she helped to found, Community Living Dundas County, and was a Lifetime Provincial Hospital Auxiliary member.
She was known as a tomboy in her youth, swimming and playing hockey, among other sports, and she also loved to garden.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Chesterville on Fri., Feb. 21 from 3 to 6 pm and Sat., Feb. 22 from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am conducted by Pastor Bud McKibbon. Interment will be held in spring at Ormond Protestant Cemetery.
Donations, in her honour, may be made to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, or you may honour her memory simply by doing something that would make your mother proud.
