Frederik Willem Furster
Frederik Willem Furster, a resident of Morrisburg for the past 21 years, passed away suddenly at home on Mon., Aug. 29, 2016. He was 62.
Fred was born in Amsterdam on Jan.12, 1954 to his parents, Stephan and Hendrika Furster (nee Eldrick). He moved to Canada with his parents and older sister when he was two years of age, settling in the area of Pierrefond, (Montreal), Que. There, two brothers, Steve and Vic, joined the family. He attended school there, finishing his degree in biology at McGill University.
The family then moved to Kingston, where he attended Queen’s University, getting his teaching degree. He went to Toronto to teach at Sprucecourt Public School when the signs of MS took over his life. Diagnosed in 1991, they figured out that he had MS while studying at McGill in the 1970’s. With all the symptoms starting then, he struggled and finished his courses.
Fred’s love was music, especially guitar, and his favourites were classical and Flamenco. He played like an angel. People could listen to him for hours. He also loved teaching guitar, which he did in Kingston sharing a studio with another musician. Involved with Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, he travelled with students to competitions as far as Niagara Falls. He was also a member of a Guitar Association in England, whose members included Paul McCartney. He had a few students in the Morrisburg, Winchester, and Morewood areas for a short time, driving to their homes to teach guitar. He also loved animals, and it was a big part of his daily life. An avid hockey fan, cheering for the Ottawa Senators, and the Montreal Canadiens, kept him entertained while bedridden the last few years of his life.
Fred also loved meditation and yoga, which helped him greatly with his MS
He was a shy, intelligent man with a dry sense of wit, caring, and giving, which will be missed so very much. He always had a spring in his step, a smile on his face, and never a bad word said about anyone. He was a dedicated partner who has left a big hole.
Goodbye dear best friend and confidant. See you later Bearse.
Fred is survived by his wife, Kim Campbell (nee Smith); his siblings, Martine White (Stuart) of Scotland, Steve Furster of Kingston, and Vic Furster (Karen) of Streetsville. He was the uncle to Justine Furster of Dartmouth, NS, Laura of Hamilton, and Daniel of Mississauga. He was the great-uncle to Jazzlyn and Lacey. He was the brother-in-law of Ted Smith (Connie) of Morrisburg, Kathy Casselman (Dennis) of Williamsburg, and Janet Munro (Ron) of Morrisburg. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews in the Morrisburg, Williamsburg, and Embrun areas, as well as Halifax.
There was no visitation at the funeral home. A public graveside service was held at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens in Kingston on Fri., Sept. 2 at 11 am with Rev. Firas Shammas officiating.
Donations to the South Dundas Animal Shelter would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
