Mary Eleanor Garlough
Mary Garlough, a resident of the Williamsburg area for the past 47 years, passed away at the Ottawa General Hospital on Tue., Feb. 24, 2009. She was 71.
She was born in Crosby on Feb. 22, 1938 to her parents Felix and Belle McCarthy. She attended a one-room elementary school in Crosby, and then St. Edward’s High School in Westport before graduating from Smiths Falls Collegiate. At the age of 17, she began teaching for the Ottawa Separate School Board. She also went to the army camp in Petawawa because she had thoughts of accepting an offshore position in the military.
During her time in Petawawa, she met Don Garlough, and they were married on Aug. 26, 1961. Together they had three sons: Lorne, John, and Dennis. She was a very busy lady. Not only was she a full-time teacher for 35 years, she also had to complete the domestic duties involved in raising three boys as well as the daily chores around the farm. Mary had the privilege of teaching all three of her sons at Elma Public School.
Patience was Mary’s virtue, and she always held her tongue in check. She was a very gentle and calm person, and she loved to entertain family and friends, especially at Christmas. Her strength was that she never got frustrated and she never seemed bothered by life’s events. She was always positive, and could always manage a smile, even when she was ill. She was a strong individual and will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Don, her sons Lorne (Susan) of Burlington, John (Diane) of Alexandria, and Dennis (Colleen) of Merlin, and her siblings Charlie (Maureen) of Crosby, and Annabelle (George) Gaffney of Vancouver. She was predeceased by her brother Joe McCarthy. She will be sadly missed by five grandchildren Sarah, Corbin, Mitchel, Rebekah, and Joe. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Fri., Feb. 27 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on Sat., Feb. 28 at 11 am with Rev. Noreen Gullons officiating, followed by interment at New Union Cemetery in Williamsburg. The pallbearers were Russell Garlough, Allan Harriman, Brian McCarthy, Adam McCarthy, Lyle Gallinger, and Allan Crowder. The honourary pallbearer was Lambert McCarthy.
Donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family.
