Daniel “Dan” Harkin
Dan Harkin passed away at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Sun., June 10, 2012.
A devoted family man, he was the beloved husband of Dianne, and loving father to Laurie (Jac) and John (Darice). Also dear to him were granddaughters Cheryl (Dave), Erin (Wayne), and Rebecca (Tom), and great-granddaughters Abby and Victoria. He has one surviving brother, Clifford Jennings of Whistler, B.C.
Dan and his family have farmed in the Winchester area for the past 42 years. Prior to farming, Dan held executive positions in the CNR, Douglas Aircraft Co., Transport Canada, Aviation Division, and later Agriculture Canada.
A true sportsman, he was an avid golfer, a national champion racing canoe paddler, a football player, and skier. He played Junior “A” Hockey for the Montreal Canadiens, where he had a great experience playing with legends Bernie “Boom Boom” Geoffrion, and Jean Béliveau.
Dan was a person who would not tolerate injustice, therefore he was active in his community, advocating for farmers and rural people, as well as promoting the agricultural industry. He was very involved with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture for many years, and then the Landowners Association.
At Dan’s request, there is to be no funeral. A private memorial will take place at a later date.
