WINCHESTER – A sleepy start to summer for some has been anything but for the Winchester Hawks.
Recently, the junior team announced a pair of signings.
Last week saw pen put to paper by Kyle Fleming, who split last season between the Ottawa Junior Canadians and Hawks.
In seven games with Winchester, he had three goals, three assists, and eight penalty minutes. Before the deal that made him a Hawk, Fleming skated in 10 games with the Canadians, notching a goal and two assists, and spending 19 minutes in the box.
The second transaction was a trade with the Alexandria Glens, which shipped Graeme Buffone to the Glengarry County squad and saw Maverick Baxtrom come to the Hawks.
Buffone, a mainstay on the Hawks blueline, played 36 games for Winchester last season, netting six goals and adding seven helper points.
Baxtrom, a Long Sault native, was in the Glens’ line-up for 42 regular season games last year, scoring six goals and grabbing 18 assists. In the playoffs, he suited up in three contests, collecting one goal.
Beyond shoring up the team’s roster, general manager Dom Menard also added depth to the Hawks’ coaching staff.
Grahame Hughes, previously a head coach in the Brockville Tikis organization who last year helped lead the Ottawa Myers Auto major peewee squad to an HEO “AAA” title, will be coming in as an assistant on the staff led by a returning Bob Gould.
