Eunice Johnston (nee Byers) passed away Thurs., June 9, 2011, at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous fight with cancer. She was 68.
From her birth in Cannamore, Ont., to her death on Thursday, Eunice touched the lives of many people with her smile and generosity. Eunice was one of eight children born to the late Dobie and Dorothy Byers, and was the beloved wife of Donald Johnston of Winchester for 48 years.
After completing her education at the Ottawa Teachers College, Eunice became an educator to many, first at Inkerman Public School, and later, at the T.R. Leger School in Winchester as campus manager. Following her retirement, Eunice enjoyed running a bed and breakfast and miniature horse farm, travelling, and enjoying her grandchildren. She also spent countless hours volunteering with the 4-H, Girl Guides, Junior Farmers, Winchester United Church, Dundas Soil and Crop Association, and Canadian Club of Morrisburg.
Eunice is survived by her husband, Donald, her two children, Karla Wilson (James) and Karen Leyten (Andrew), and three grandchildren, Zachary, Noah, and Ryan. Eunice will be forever remembered by her brothers and sisters: Freda Arnott (the late Peter), the late Stuart Byers (Jean), Archie Byers (Marion), Linden Byers (Beth), Eleanor Dingwall (the late Donnie), Edsel Byers (Gail), and Connie Froats (Dwayne), and countless other nieces, nephews, students, and friends who were blessed to know her.
A Memorial Service will be held at Winchester United Church today (Wed., June 15) at 2 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winchester District Memorial Hospital Auxiliary or the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.
The arrangements are entrusted to the Daniels Funeral Chapels Inc. In Winchester (613-774-1117).
