CAPE BRETON, N.S. – The top youth track and field athletes from across Canada gathered in Cape Breton, N.S., Fri., Aug. 9 and Sat., Aug. 10 for the Legion Nationals.

Local budding track star Jack Link competed in the event geared towards athletes 18 and under for the first time.

In the 1,200 metre event he finished 24th with a time of 3:35. Link was disappointed with his performance, which was off his personal best by six seconds.

He channeled his energy into his next event, the 2,000 metres, and finished eighth in the finals. Link is better suited to this event and he shaved more than seven seconds off his personal best to finish with a time of 6:10.3.

The national championship, funded by the Legion, gives youth across the country a chance to compete against the best and is often a stepping stone for the Olympic program.
