A resident of the Bayfield Manor Nursing Home in Kemptville for the past eight years, Eileen Merkley passed away there on Fri., Dec. 24, 2010. She was 101.
Eileen was born on the family farm in Nation Valley on July 23, 1909, to her parents, George and Mary Merkley (nee Bogart), and she lived there with her family for most of her life.
While on the farm, she faithfully did her daily chores. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing. When the farm was sold she moved to Kemptville, and lived there for eight years. In her later years, while living in Kemptville, she spent countless hours looking through her photo albums, Ideal magazines, and books on the Royal family. Her kind heart and gentle spirit touched all those who knew her.
Eileen was the loving aunt of Barbara Ann (Morris) Dewe, Carol (Bill) Coulthart, Doug (Eleanor) Merkley, Lorraine (Charles) Pollock, and George (Sandra) Holmes. Eileen will be fondly remembered as a great-aunt and great-great-aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, George and Mary Merkley, her sister, Lenora (Harry) Holmes, her brother, Lloyd (Leila) Merkley, and her niece, Muriel (George) Wood.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Chesterville on Wed., Dec. 29 from noon until the time of the funeral service at 1:30, at the funeral home, with Rev. Christine Lowson officiating. Interment followed at Maple Ridge Cemetery in Chesterville. The pallbearers were Ron Merkley, Steven Coulthart, David Clermont, Martin Viktora, Jamie Pollock, and Philip Pollock. The honourary pallbearers were Glen Vasey and Marius Korevaar.
