Ronald L. Merkley

Ronald Merkley, formerly of Chesterville, passed away at Totara Hospice in Auckland, New Zealand on Sun., Dec. 22, 2019, surrounded by his New Zealand family. He was 75.

He was the beloved husband of Margaret Macdonald (nee Bouthoorn); the much loved Dad of Chris Macdonald (Erin) of Auckland, and Ryan Merkley (Sarah Leblanc) of Ottawa; and dear Grandpa of Alexa and Isaac Macdonald. He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Annie Merkley (nee Windsor). He was a friend of Bill W.

Ron graduated from Chesterville High School and began work at Canada Starch in Cardinal. Realizing he needed a trade, he began an apprenticeship at C & M Texaco in Chesterville where he met his future wife. After obtaining his Class A Mechanics licence, he continued with C & M, then went on to work at George Petric Ford in Vernon, and eventually Speedy Muffler in Ottawa.

During their 43 years together, Ron and Marg travelled extensively. Among their trips was a journey in 1995, for the wedding of Chris Macdonald and Erin Whibley when they fell in love with New Zealand, subsequently taking up permanent residency there in 1999.

Those who knew Ron will remember his wicked sense of humour. He could deliver any line with a completely deadpan expression. Even after leaving Canada he maintained many longtime friendships with his Canadian friends, co-workers, and neighbours. He will be sadly missed.

A Celebration of Life was held at Totara Hospice on Fri., Dec. 27.

In Ron’s memory, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
