William Walter Beecher Shadbolt

William Walter Beecher Shadbolt passed away peacefully at Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Mon., March 21, 2016 in his 95th year.
Walter leaves behind his beloved wife and “registered nurse” of 68 years, Marjorie (nee Jackson), and their three children, Stephen (Cathy), Jamie (Elaine), and Patti-Ann. He will be missed dearly by his grandchildren, Nicole Shadbolt (Bradley Coates), Emma Reaney (Scott), Treena Beckstead (Kelly), Kaley Guy (Tyler Brown), and Brandon Wagner. In his final years, his 12 great-grandchildren brought him a lot of joy.
He was born in Hybla, Ont. to William Henry Shadbolt and Alexina Beecham. He is survived by his brother, Garland (the late Jean) and Reginald (Audrey), and their families. He was predeceased by his sisters, Jessie Steinburg (Morley), Bessie Whiteman (Tom), and Irene Whiteman (Frank).
Walter and Marjorie Shadbolt moved to Winchester in 1964, when they took ownership of the Stedman’s Department Store on the main corner. Walter was a well-known and successful business owner who always advocated for the betterment and growth of our community. He was an active member of the town council, serving as reeve for two terms. He played an instrumental role in having Dundas Manor built in Winchester, and the Bank of Montreal brought to town.
He was a stubborn man who fought hard for what he believed in – this served his family and community well.
Last year, Walter received his 60-year membership pin from the Lion’s Club. He was a dedicated member, and in 1968, he was successful in bringing the Lion’s Club to Winchester. He was also a long standing member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, and a devoted Christian. Those close to Walter knew that he was a great worrier – this was a sign of his love. He worried about a great many things, but never about his journey Home at the end of his days.
Friends are invited to visit the Daniels Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 472 Main St. in Winchester (613-774-1117) on Wed., March 23 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thurs., March 24 at 11 am.
Donations in memory of Walter made to the Alzheimer Society or Spruce Haven Cemetery in Brinston would be appreciated.
