Seeing someone soar overtop their bicycle’s handlebars, sans helmet of course, is a sure sign that nature’s weeding-out process is constantly in action. And seeing the same person a day later, again riding her bike without a helmet, confirms my suspicions.

As if on cue, Maxime Bernier, the woefully ignorant leader of the Peoples Party of Canada, realized over the weekend that he’s grossly under qualified to take on grown men this election and instead turned his hateful vitriol toward a teenage girl.

Irony = the same people condemning our reporters for being at the scene of auto accidents then being spotted lining up hours ahead of the demolition derby in Newington last weekend. One crash sequence fits their narrative better than the other evidently.

The Eastern Ontario Compaction Day was not only a great research tool and unique learning opportunity, it was also a showcase of the kind of innovative work being done to bring farming practices in line with new social, economic and environmental realities.

The farming community is at the tip of the spear when it comes to how we will be able to feed ourselves going forward. Often people are critical of agriculture and their role in sustainability, but the desire to innovate is there. Real life application may not happen fast enough for some, but farming is complex and subject to countless unique variables.

Ian McDonald from OMAFRA explained compaction quite eloquently: “If you lie down on the ground and a baby walks over you or rolls over you, you don’t care. If I walk over you, you won’t like that, but I roll over you, you can handle that. If it’s a sumo wrestler, you don’t care if he’s rolling or walking, it’s going to hurt like hell.”
