Ruth Styles

Ruth Styles, a resident of Dundas Manor in Winchester for almost four years, passed away peacefully on Fri., March 1, 2019. She was 95.
She was born in Matilda Township on April 3, 1923, to her parents, Grant and Inda Beckstead (nee Larmour). Ruth was the oldest child in the Beckstead family. She had a sister, Jean, who predeceased her, and two younger brothers, Harry and Glenn.
At the age of 18, Ruth went to Normal School in Ottawa. Her first teaching job was in a one-room school house in Bainsville, Ont. Her next posting was in another small school in Froatburn. where she also taught all grades. She met James Styles while she was teaching there, and in January 1945, James and Ruth were married. They had a very long and happy married life – 72 years in fact. Constancy, faithfulness, devotion to her husband and children, and a happy home life…. This was at the centre of her life.
Ruth continued her teaching career in the old town of Iroquois for several years until the children came along, and resumed her teaching career shortly thereafter when she filled in at the new Iroquois Public School for Evelyn Van Allen in the Grade 3 class. She continued to teach Grade 3 or a split Grade 3/4 until her retirement in 1985. She was a favourite teacher for many children in Iroquois during her long career.
She was very active at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in Iroquois in the ACW and in many areas of church work. She enjoyed sharing her love of cooking and crafting with others, and was devoted to church and community work.
Ruth is survived by her children Christine Leng (Siegfried) of Russell, David of Iroquois, Barbara Vingerhoeds (Gerry) of Carleton Place, and Marikay Styles of L’Orignal; and her siblings Harry Beckstead (Arlie) of Brockville, and Glenn Becksted (Donna) of Morrisburg. She will be fondly remembered by grandchildren, Kirsten, Elissa, Michael, Travis, Carrie, Brandon, Christopher, and Jenna; and great-grandchildren Octavia, Nicolas, Sebastian, Alexander, William, Thomas, Henry, Delilah, Yannah, Olivia Ruth, Jepson; and Sullivan. She was predeceased by her husband, James H. Styles; her parents; her sister, Jean Beckstead; and her great-grandson, Maximilian. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Iroquois on Tues., March 5 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. An Order of the Eastern Star service was held on Tuesday evening at 6:30 pm. The funeral service was held at the funeral home on Wed., March 6 at 1 pm with Rev. Jon Martin and Rev. Pat Martin officiating, assisted by Rev. Craig Bowers. Spring interment will be at St. Lawrence Valley Union Cemetery in Long Sault. The pallbearers were Michael Vingerhoeds, Travis Vingerhoeds, Christopher Bailey, Donald Roy, Chris Nolan, and Jeffrey Bridgen.
Donations to the Alzheimer Society, SOS Children’s Villages of Canada, or Winchester District Memorial Hospital would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
